Auckland Council's alcohol advertising survey ends tomorrow
26 October 2021
Views will be used to inform an investigation into ways to reduce community exposure from this type of advertising.
But Alcohol Beverages Council executive director Bridget MacDonald says banning signage won't reduce alcohol-related harm.
She says globally, virtually all research shows that alcohol marketing has no or very moderate effect on total alcohol consumption.
Alcohol Health Watch director Dr Nicki Jackson holds the opposite view, saying alcohol marketing does impact communities.
She says for people with alcohol use disorders there's psychological cues from seeing advertising - that can trigger drinking and relapse.
Jackson says the council should use the results to advocate Central Government for change.
