The Transport Accident Investigation Commission has opened an inquiry into a freight train derailing near Marton last night

A pair of locomotives hauling a long train of wagons derailed where flooding had damaged a section of the Main Trunk line.

Investigators have started initial work recording the accident scene and gathering evidence that could disappear or change - such as the effects of weather and flooding.
