Sir Wira Gardiner, a soldier, public servant and founding director of the Waitangi Tribunal has died aged 78.
Chair of the GPL Board for Whanau Ora in the South Island says they worked closely with him in his role as acting Secretary for Children and Chief Executive of Oranga Tamariki.
He says he was the perfect partner to the relationship.
Meanwhile, Winston Peters says despite his training, Wira was an extraordinary practical yet visionary personality and trusted across the political divide.
He says any plaudits he receives are thoroughly deserved.
