Police say they were called to a family harm incident at a home west of invercargill about 9.15 yesterday morning, but neither the victim nor alleged offender were found.
When the man was eventually tracked down at his property he got into a car, rammed a police vehicle and fled.
He was stopped on State Highway One near Dacre, where he began confronting motorists with a modified gun.
He broke the window of one persons car, attempted to enter another and then approached Police wielding a knife.
That's when he was shot, just before midday.
The man's in hospital in a serious but stable condition and the officer who discharged the weapon is receiving support.
The Independent Police Conduct Authority has been notified.
