Firefighters are still working to contain a massive fire on DOC land near Invercargill - at Awarua

Crews have been working hard throughout the day to extinguish the 1350 hectare blaze.

Incident Controller Mark Mawhinney says he's pleased with their progress - but wary about 100 kilometre an hour gusts predicted for tomorrow.

He says that increases the chance the fire may become more active, and warning Waituna locals they may see more smoke.
