Police are searching for a man in Taupo's Tauhara Forest, following a firearms incident

They say a firearm was fired at officers conducting a routine vehicle stop in the forest just after 2am.

They say the driver fled on foot.

No one was injured, but the Armed Offenders Squad and the Eagle helicopter have been called in.

Police have found a firearm that may be connected to the incident.

Motorists on State Highway 5 are asked to phone 111 if they have seen anyone hitchhiking in this area.
