Health authorities are urging the public to save Christchurch's emergency department for emergencies

Health authorities are urging the public to save Christchurch's emergency department for emergencies

The pressure was heightened for Canterbury DHB staff over the weekend, with several trauma cases within a short time frame.

CEO Peter Bramley says people with non-emergency cases will experience an extremely long wait as it needs to ensure those with life-threatening conditions are seen first.

When ED is busy, people are encouraged to visit an Urgent Care centre or phone Healthline.

The pressure doesn't stop at ED - as of yesterday morning Christchurch Hospital was operating at a 109 per cent capacity.
