The Chip Ganassi driver lead the most laps from pole, before a pit lane speeding violation in his final stop ended his chances of victory.
It opened the door for team mate Marcus Ericsson who became the second Swede to win the race.
It's the fourth time in the last seven years Dixon has started from pole position but has been unable to turn it into victory, ending in 21st.

Fellow Kiwi Scott McLaughlin crashed out of contention with 45 laps remaining.
