The High Court in Christchurch heard Garath Collings argued with Robin Friend through his driver's window - then accelerated at him as he walked in front of the vehicle.
Justice Cameron Mander says Collings used his car as others might use a gun or knife.
Justice Mander sentenced the 43 year old father-of-three to life in prison, with 11 years minimum non-parole period.
