Urgent calls to address consent laws
Urgent calls to address consent laws
3 August 2022
A man found guilty yesterday of 33 child sex abuse charges in relation to girls aged 8 and 12, claimed he had a consensual relationship with the older child.
Although the legal age for consent is 16, the defence was open to Telisa Leiataua, because he was charged with sexual violation by rape.
HELP Auckland executive director Kathryn McPhillips says the law needs to change to state children can't consent to sexual-intercourse.
She says the law needs to be in line with what New Zealanders believe it should be.
