In November 2019, Niklas Gebhardt drove through the bend of Lehmans and River Roads near Rangiora Racecourse at 130 kilometres an hour.
The car launched 24 metres in the air before hitting a tree and bursting into flames, and six year old Lachlan died at the scene.
Gebhardt has been jailed for five years today, in an emotional sentencing hearing in the Christchurch High Court.
Detective Senior Sergeant Damon Wells says nothing will bring Lachlan back, but he hopes the sentencing will bring some closure in this sad, senseless case.
