The Police Minister is confident a new law change will help reduce gun crime

The Firearms Prohibition Order Legislation Bill has passed its third reading in Parliament overnight.

Under the law, anyone with a serious conviction could be banned from having a gun, or being in places where guns are likely to be, for ten years.

Chris Hipkins says the bill also also provides flexibility for courts to help reintegrate offenders.

He says he is not willing to give up on these people, and try and get them back on the straight and narrow.
