Fire crews are still dampening down hotspots at a massive scrap metal fire in Christchurch

Fire crews are still dampening down hotspots at a massive scrap metal fire in Christchurch

Hundreds of wrecked cars ignited on the site of National Steel, at Woolston on Wednesday night.

It was brought under control yesterday, but firefighters remain there this morning.

Fire and Emergency group manager Mike Bowden says the area that caught fire looks apocalyptic.

He says it looks like a scene from Mad Max, with burnt out cars everywhere.
