A main road into Christchurch remains closed following a serious crash

The two-vehicle collision, involving a St John Health Shuttle, happened on State Highway 1 between Rolleston and Burnham this morning.

Seven patients have been taken to hospital, two in critical condition, three in a serious condition and two with moderate injuries.

A person was trapped in the first row of seats in the back of the van and had to be extracted by firefighters.

Part of the road is closed and detours are in place.
