Farms and dairy sheds are inundated with water as heavy rain pours over the upper South Island

Farms and dairy sheds are inundated with water as heavy rain pours over the upper South Island

MetService has issued its highest alert -- a Red Warning - for more heavy rain tonight - more surface flooding and slips are likely due to the ground already being saturated.

More than 400 homes have been evacuated Nelson so far.

Rai Valley farmer Steven Leov says the floodwater has prevented him from milking his cows this morning.

He says about 50 percent of his land in underwater.

Meanwhile, Buller Civil Defence remains on standby, with the regions state of emergency in place until Monday.

Controller Al Lawn says all the bunds, sandbags and inflatable barriers will stay in place until the threat of further flooding has passed.
