D'Angelo was laid to rest over the weekend

D'Angelo's former bands, The Soultronics and The Vanguard, both performed musical tributes during the service whilst Wonder performed the songs If It's Magic, The Lord's Prayer and As alongside the two groups and harpist Brandee Younger.

A programme for the funeral read: "Through music, love and light, Michael D'Angelo Archer's spirit will shine forever."

The Grammy-winning star - whose real name was Michael Eugene Archer - died at the age of 51 last month from pancreatic cancer with his family stating that they were "heartbroken" to be announcing the news.

The statement read: "The shining star of our family has dimmed his light for us in this life... After a prolonged and courageous battle with cancer, we are heartbroken to announce that Michael D'Angelo Archer, known to his fans around the world as D'Angelo, has been called home, departing this life today, October 14th, 2025.

"We are saddened that he can only leave dear memories with his family, but we are eternally grateful for the legacy of extraordinarily moving music he leaves behind.

"We ask that you respect our privacy during this difficult time but invite you all join us in mourning his passing while also celebrating the gift of song that he has left for the world."

Tributes to D'Angelo flooded in following his passing, with Beyonce hailing him as "the pioneer of neo-soul" music.

She wrote on her website: "Rest in peace, Michael Eugene Archer, known to the world of music as the inimitable D'Angelo.

"We thank you for your beautiful music, your voice, your proficiency on the piano, your artistry. You were the pioneer of neo-soul and that changed and transformed rhythm and blues forever. We will never forget you."

The R+B legend's daughter Imani Archer added that she was in "absolute disbelief and shock" following the tragic news.

She wrote on Instagram: "dear daddy, there are no words to describe this immeasurable loss

I'm in absolute disbelief and shock.

"you were my biggest hype man. my protector. my biggest musical inspiration. the kindest and most selfless man and the best father anyone could've ever had. (sic)"
