A wildfire burning in the Tongariro National Park has more than doubled in size overnight - to cover an estimated one-thousand hectares

The fire broke out yesterday afternoon - prompting an air evacuation of 43 hikers and a hut warden as a precaution.

Assistant Commander Nick West says today's operation includes six fire trucks, five tankers, six helicopters, and two fixed wing aircraft.

He says the fire in not under control, there are no reports of structures being damaged, and a fire investigator is working to establish the cause.

The Tongariro Alpine Crossing and Northern Circuit are closed today.

State Highway 47 is closed between the intersections with SH48 and SH46.
