| Stuff.co.nz - 10 Nov (Stuff.co.nz)Robots have replaced many US manufacturing workers, but new mechanical exoskeletons being tested by Ford may help factory workers to function like bionic people, reducing the physical damage of millions of repetitive tasks over many years. The US automaker said on Thursday that workers at two US factories are testing upper-body exoskeletons developed by Richmond, California-based Ekso Bionics, which are designed to reduce injuries and increase productivity. The four EksoVests were paid for by the United Auto Workers union, which represents hourly workers at Ford, and the automaker plans tests for the exoskeleton in other regions including Europe and South America. The cost of the exoskeletons, which were developed as part of a partnership between Ford and Ekso, was undisclosed. Two workers at each of the company`s Wayne and Flat Rock factories have been testing the exoskeletons since May. Read...Newslink ©2024 to Stuff.co.nz | |

| | | Stuff.co.nz - 8 Nov (Stuff.co.nz)Motorists in many parts of the country have been hit by the third petrol price increase in a week. Stations in central Wellington and many parts of the South Island show regular petrol is now $2.129 a litre, marking a 9c a litre in eight days. The increase was in place on Tuesday evening. The so-called `main port` price is now at the highest level since November 2014. The pricing, used widely in Wellington, the South Island and pockets of the upper North Island where there is no regional discounting, peaked at 2.269 in 2013, according to data collected by the AA. While petrol companies have partly blamed a sinking New Zealand dollar for the recent increases, the kiwi is marginally stronger now than it was on October 30. | | | Stuff.co.nz - 29 Sep (Stuff.co.nz)Once abandoned and empty, the former Dunlop tyre factory in Upper Hutt has been revitalised into a commercial and manufacturing hub thanks to the vision of its owner Malcolm Gillies. Colin Williams reports. Property developer Malcolm Gillies has little time for sentiment. In the late 1970s Malcolm Gillies was an apprentice fitter at Upper Hutt`s Dunlop tyre factory. Today he owns the South Pacific Industrial Park, where the tyre factory once supported an economy protected from imports. But with the success and continuing expansion of the industrial park, the 59-year-old allows himself some emotional slack. `We`ve breathed new life into it [the industrial site] and there`s an immense sense of satisfaction to see the old girl up and running. `It`s exciting to see how it`s come together, really. It could have been a [white] elephant, couldn`t it, but it`s actually turned out very, very vibrant and positive.` Today, after almost a decade of his management, the South Pacific Industrial Park is a fully leased commercial and manufacturing hub, accommodating more than 35 businesses and providing almost 400 jobs, the number of rubber workers on site in Dunlop`s heyday.
