A 14-year-old girl was killed by a car on Severn Street - State Highway One - about 10.40 last night.
Waitaki District mayor Gary Kircher says there've been too many tragedies, what with also losing a mother and son in a tractor accident three weeks ago.
He says parents with teenage kids need to know where they are ... and keep them safe.
But Gary Kircher says everyone's very sad for the family and victim - and this is a time to look out for each other.
Police are calling on any information from the public.
