    Central Otago residents have been shaken awake by a powerful earthquake



    A magnitude 5.5 quake struck 40 kilometres north-east of Milford Sound shortly before half past three this morning.

    It had a shallow depth of five kilometres.

    It's been felt strongly throughout the Queenstown - Wanaka regions, as well as along the West Coast and Dunedin.

    It was followed by two smaller quakes in the same area, each measuring 3.9.
