Four crews and six helicopters are battling the flames near Broken River, after the blaze broke out yesterday.
Fire fighters and the Department of Conservation are working together - with a nearby DOC hut under threat.
Meanwhile, a fire near Motueka River in the upper South Island is about 60 per cent contained.
A helicopter is helping from the air.
It's thought a burn-off got out of hand, scorching seven hectares of land.
