A Kaikoura employer who didn't provide appropriate eye protection has been fined thousands after a young worker lost vision in one eye

A Kaikoura employer who didn't provide appropriate eye protection has been fined thousands after a young worker lost vision in one eye

A piece of metal flew into the 17 year old's right eye as he was chiselling in March 2020.

Agricultural fencing sole trader, Daniel Anderson, didn't notify WorkSafe of the injury, and when asked by inspectors whether he told workers to use protective gear, responded he's "not their mother".

National manager of investigations, Hayden Mander, says Anderson's comments reflect an outdated, unacceptable, and cavalier attitude.

He has been fined 22-thousand dollars.
