A Wanaka family is choosing to rough it for their baby's first Christmas

A Wanaka family is choosing to rough it for their baby's first Christmas

Ashley and Steve Peters are taking their six-month-old daughter Brook to stay at one of DOC's most popular backcountry huts - Welcome Flat on the West Coast.

The journey will take them on a seven-hour hike through the Westland Tai Poutini National Park.

Ashley Peters says they're going to have a different Christmas compared to many.

She's taking some Christmas bunting with her, to make sure they have some decorations.
