Some West Coast residents have been woken by an early morning tornado

A person living in Cobden, north of Greymouth, called Police just before 1am to report their windows being blown in by what appeared to be a tornado.

They reportedly saw their neighbour's roof come off while they were on the phone.

Police also found a roof at the local school was partially lifted.
