Geonet has recorded more than 70 earthquakes off the coast of Whakatane - ranging from 3.9 to 4.9 magnitude.
However, they say it's normal for this part of New Zealand to see swarms, but people shouldn't be too alarmed at the frequency.
Seismologist Elizabeth Abbott says it's hard to predict when an where an earthquake will hit.
She says it's possible, but probably unlikely - but is recommending people be prepared for anything.
