An "atmospheric river" is set to drench the eastern North Island, with one forecaster warning parts of Bay of Plenty and Tairawhiti could receive up to two months of rain in just 48 hours

The fresh warnings come as a state of emergency has now been lifted in Queenstown, leaving locals to focus on the clean up.

MetService meteorologist Clare O'Connor said while the North Island would be hit with the heaviest falls last night and this morning, significant and widespread impacts are possible.

An Orange Heavy Rain Warning's in place for Tairawhiti which may cause streams and rivers to rise rapidly.

In the South Island, a Road Snowfall Warning's in place for the Lewis Pass, Arthurs Pass and Porters Pass .. until 2pm this afternoon.
