DOC is questioning why there's been a high number of seal deaths around coastlines

Latest figures show 183 seals have been found dead on Kaikoura's coast and 159 in Napier.

Tests for disease have so far been negative.

DOC Technical Marine Adviser, Mike Ogle, says the deaths are well above what they'd normally expect at this time of year.

He's asking people to report any freshly dead seals, as their bodies can help investigate the potential causes of death.
