Tauranga City Council is hoping to light up the skies for New Years, despite the threat of severe weather

Tauranga City Council is hoping to light up the skies for New Years, despite the threat of severe weather

The Council yesterday cancelled all community celebrations due to the band of heavy rain, with possible thunderstorms and lightning.

Weather permitting, it aims to put on displays at around 9:30 and midnight, and will update residents on the Council's Facebook pages.

It says if it goes ahead, they'll be visible across Mt Maunganui, Papamoa, the city centre and Waimapu Estuary -- and recommend people to watch from their home.
