Four orange weather warnings are in place from Westland, south of Hokitika, through to George Sound in Fiordland.
Westland District Mayor Helen Lash says people should only travel while it's clear.
She says they'd prefer people weren't on the roads at night as this creates problems for emergency services.
NZTA's also asking those at the top of the South Island to be prepared, with the weather affecting State Highways 6, 60, and 63, from tomorrow morning.
