Fuel giant Gull - needs to look to its laurels for cheap fuel - with a Z-Energy competitor nipping at its heels

Fuel-finding app Gaspy indicates Gull Atiamuri, near Taupo - which is famed for low prices, has been pipped by Waikaraka U-GO in South Auckland.

The self-service option opened last month.

Gaspy Director, Mike Newton, says that model is a move from the norm of 20-years ago.

He says petrol stations once had retail shops alongside - but there's been a shift towards discount retailers, more often than not self-serve.
