Police say a man strangled a police dog unconscious during a wild chase through Auckland yesterday afternoon

Police say a man strangled a police dog unconscious during a wild chase through Auckland yesterday afternoon

They say the 31-year-old from Whanganui was signalled to pull over at the CBD's Waterloo Quadrant, but fled through Mount Albert, to Avondale, where his vehicle got stuck on train tracks.

Police allege the disqualified-driver then tried to run - and was confronted by officers who deployed the dog.

He allegedly began choking the animal, before being arrested.

The man's appearing in Auckland District Court today facing nine charges.
