Police accept a watchdog's findings into the wrongful arrest of a person following an Auckland fire

Police accept a watchdog's findings into the wrongful arrest of a person following an Auckland fire

In May last year, officers attended a Westgate blaze where a caretaker described who she thought deliberately lit it.

Officers proceeded to arrest a man they wrongfully believed was responsible based on the caretaker's description.

The Independent Police Conduct Authority says the officer didn't have good cause to suspect the man was responsible for the arson.

Police say their staff apologised to the man and they've discussed learnings from the event.
