Concern for our hospitals' preparedness, if another mass casualty event were to happen

Concern for our hospitals' preparedness, if another mass casualty event were to happen

A New Zealand Medical Journal article's looked at how resources were used at Christchurch Hospital, during the 2019 mosque shootings and the Whakaari White Island eruption.

It says the intensity of care needed for burn victims, placed strain on hospital services.

Trauma surgeon Chris Wakeman says a comprehensive analysis of resource allocation, surge capacity and funding models is needed.

He says no hospitals in the South Island have been verified, to prove they have proper trauma care.
