The 27-year-old, who has name suppression, killed 54-year-old entomologist Stephen Thorpe, outside the Blockhouse Bay Tennis Club last August.
Justice Graham Lang says a long-term stay at Auckland's Mason Clinic is the only choice, given the risk the man presents to the community.
He says he'll need many years of treatment and close supervision before the risk will abate.
