Police are acknowledging a watchdog which has found two officers used unjustified force in the Auckland Custody Unit

Police are acknowledging a watchdog which has found two officers used unjustified force in the Auckland Custody Unit

In 2023 an 18-year-old hit his head against the edge of a bed plinth after a custody officer and police sergeant were trying to restrain him.

The Independent Police Conduct Authority says the officers had less forceful options available - and the standard of care fell below acceptable levels.

Police says both officers were charged with common assault following an investigation - but the matter was later dismissed.

An employment process for the pair remains ongoing.
