The West Coast Regional Council is upping their game on flood protection - to ensure Westport can continue to insure their homes

Buller District Council says it's received a letter from AA Insurance, advising it's temporarily halting new property policies because of the high flood-risk.

Regional Council Chief Executive Darryl Lew says they're currently building 17 kilometres of flood banking in the town - which is a first for the town.

He says then they'll write to all insurance companies with revised flood hazard maps.
