The death of 88-year-old Edward Duffy in Rotorua in 2023 could have been avoided - if the man who crashed into his mobility scooter hadn't been speeding

The death of 88-year-old Edward Duffy in Rotorua in 2023 could have been avoided - if the man who crashed into his mobility scooter hadn't been speeding

Duffy was struck by unlicensed motorcyclist Colin Rondon - while crossing the road at a red pedestrian signal.

Coroner Ian Telford's revealed Rondon was riding at speeds of more than 130 kilometres an hour through the city prior to the collision - and his motorcycle was unfit for road use.

Telford's noted Duffy shouldn't have crossed at a red signal - but says Rondon should have moderated his speed.

He's also emphasised the importance of licensing.

Rondon had eight previous driving convictions.
