    The Defence Force has confirmed an oil leak from an anchored vessel in Akaroa Harbour, was caused by a defect in the starboard engine's oil cooler


    Up to 300 litres of lubricating oil spilled from the HMNZS Te Kaha this morning, prompting an immediate response from Environment Canterbury.

    A Defence Force spokesperson says soaker pads were used to remove oil from the water's surface, while crew also helped disperse oil.

    The source of the leak has now been isolated, and no further oil is escaping.
