    The ASB Classic men's singles champion has been forced to retire with a back complaint against American Ben Shelton in the fourth round of the Australian tennis Open.

    Monfils opened his season in Brisbane on New Year's Eve - playing twice there before five matches in Auckland and then four in Melbourne.
