Canterbury police will be keeping a close eye on party-goers this weekend, especially in university neighbourhoods

Gathering limits under the red light setting have increased to 200 and there are no limits on outdoor events.

There have been large gatherings in Riccarton and Ilam this month, with 40 alcohol infringement notices issued, six arrests and 16 stereos seized.

Police say people need to look out for their friends, have a glass of water between alcoholic drinks, and eat food if drinking.

They say people need to keep an eye on their drinks, bag or wallet.
