A 42-year-old Christchurch man's been sent to jail for more than three years for his involvement in an illegal tobacco operation

He was found guilty of unlicensed manufacture of tobacco products, burglary and removal of goods from a Customs Controlled Area.

He also defrauded customs out of 1.56 million dollars in revenue.

The man claimed the boxes of tobacco he imported were tea from China.

Customs officials seized 423 kilograms of loose tobacco, more than 16 thousand cigarettes, machinery used to make cigarettes, labels, and some cash.
