Diane Keaton's death shocked many. US media says family kept her sudden decline private

The actor's cause of death has not been made public, but with US media reporting her family chose to keep her health decline private.

News of actor Diane Keaton's death prompted emotional responses from her fans and peers, with many shocked by the 79-year-old's death.

US entertainment website TMZ has published audio it claims to be from an emergency services worker dispatching a crew to the actor's home.

But the clip gives little insight into the circumstances around Keaton's death.

    Here's what we know.

What was Diana Keaton's cause of death?

Diane Keaton's cause of death hasn't been made public.

Keaton's death was first reported by US entertainment outlet People, which confirmed her death with an unnamed spokesperson for the actor.

They gave no details about the circumstances surrounding her death.

"There are no further details available at this time, and her family has asked for privacy in this moment of great sadness," the spokesperson told the publication

A family member told The Associated Press that Keaton died in California with loved ones.

    Was Diana Keaton sick?

Details about her health aren't clear.

In a second story about her death, People reported Keaton's health had "declined suddenly".

The outlet quoted an unnamed spokesperson who spoke vaguely about Keaton's condition, only saying the actor's family kept her condition out of the public sphere.

"In her final months, she was surrounded only by her closest family, who chose to keep things very private," the spokesperson told People

"Even longtime friends weren’t fully aware of what was happening."

    Few details in 911 audio

The audio published by TMZ is quite brief and gives little detail

TMZ said it obtained "dispatch audio" directed to the local fire department.

The website features a 20-second clip of a person saying "rescue 19, person down" before giving her address, which the outlet bleeped out.

Fans flock to last social media post

The most recent photo posted to Keaton's Instagram account featured her dog Reggie as part of a collaboration with a homewares brand.

The post was back in April, but fans of the actor took to the comments section over the weekend to pay tribute to Keaton.

"A couple of years ago @diane_keaton saw me trying to help a stray dog who was running down Sunset Boulevard," one Instagram user said.

"She pulled over, grabbed a bag of treats from her car, and spent the next 2.5 hours on foot with me.

"Sadly we never got the pup, but I walked away knowing that I had just spent the afternoon with the very best of humans."

"Dianne stopped in the middle of the mall to take a photo of me and my husband carrying our Labrador on the escalators because she loved dogs so much. What an angel! Rest in peace xxx," another added.
