Customs is warning organised crime groups are smuggling card-skimming devices into New Zealand, hidden inside low-value electronics like air-fryers and laptops

Customs is warning organised crime groups are smuggling card-skimming devices into New Zealand, hidden inside low-value electronics like air-fryers and laptops

Open Justice reports the devices read bank card magnetic strips, while hidden keypads or cameras capture PIN numbers - allowing criminals to clone cards and steal cash, or sell the data.

Chief Customs Officer Nigel Barnes says the groups operate internationally and constantly adapt to avoid detection.

He says people should take precautions and check ATMs and payment terminals for signs of tampering.
