A bus carrying a Chinese tour group has crashed on Southland's Athol Five Rivers Highway - injuring 12

Police were called about 8.30am - and suspect black ice in the area may've been a factor.

One person's seriously injured and two are in moderate condition - nine others sustained minor injuries.

The group were heading to Queenstown and Milford Sound.

Part of the road is closed.
