A Wellington community is shaken after a fatal Police shooting yesterday

Armed officers were called to Newlands' Kingsbridge Place just before 3pm, where a man with gang connections was holding a knife to a woman's neck.

After unsuccessful attempts to talk with him, and with grave concerns for the captive's safety, they fired multiple rounds, killing the man.

Acting Wellington District Commander Inspector Tracey Thompson says no officer takes discharging a firearm lightly.

She's assuring the community this is an isolated incident -- and a number of investigations are under way.

Police are continuing a forensic scene examination and talking with locals.
