Police are advising motorists in the Waikato area, including Te Awamutu, Otorohanga, and Waipa Districts, to stay off the roads this evening due to heavy rainfall and flooding

State Highway 39 south of Pirongia is closed, and it's expected that other roads, including SH3 south of Kihikihi, may close over the coming hours.

Elsewhere, State Highway 1 is currently experiencing significant flooding in the Orauanui, Taupo area.

Police began receiving reports of flooding around 6.30pm.

They're recommend delaying travel in both areas if possible.
