The man accused of killing 65-year-old Wellington man Simon Bird has faced court but will get to keep his name secret for now

The 23-year-old appeared in the Wellington District Court charged with murdering Bird and injuring two others in a separate incident.

The relationship between the man and Bird, who was found dead at his Northland property last Tuesday, is unknown.

The man's lawyer says there are some mental health issues that are needed to be discussed with a nurse.

He's been remanded in custody until his next appearance in May.
