Hundreds of households are without power in Northland as the region faces higher-than expected winds

Northpower's website is showing over 1500 customers are affected in areas including around Dargaville, Paparoa, and Whareora.

It is urging everyone to treat all lines and equipment as live at all times.

Northland - north of Whangarei is also under a strong wind watch until 9pm.
