Fonterra is partnering with US-based energy company PolyJoule to test the battery - which is made from an organic material that acts like metal.
It supported 10 months of dairy shed operations on a Fonterra farm at Te Rapa last year - and is now moving to the company's Waitoa site.
Fonterra says tapping into a sustainable and secure electricity supply is vital, because the company uses 2.5 percent of the national grid.
PolyJoule chief executive Eli Paster says the battery doesn't rely on lithium, nickel or lead - making it easier to source and safer to manufacture.
