A consolidating day for the Giro d'Italia tour leader

Deceunick-Quickstep's pink jersey wearer Joao Almeida was third over the line in this morning's 225 kilometre stage five, and increased his overall lead to 43 seconds.

Jonathon Caicedo started the day a few seconds behind but eventually finished 16 and a half minutes behind stage winner Filippo Ganna in 85th.

Almeida says knowing Caiceido was struggling through 3700 metres of climbing eased his time in the saddle.
